NSF Requirement - Definition of Year

Per the NSF PAPP Guide, the National Science Foundation limits senior personnel salary requested in the proposal to no more than two months of their regular salary in any one year. This limit includes salary compensation received from all NSF-funded grants. It is up to the institution to define and consistently apply the term “year”.

To meet this requirement, proposals to the National Science Foundation should include a statement in the budget justification describing how the institution defines year. The University of Chicago defines year as fiscal year.

Proposals should include the following statement in the budget justification:
The University of Chicago uses the following definition for the purpose of calculating the NSF two-month limit on salary requested in the proposal budget for senior personnel. The University of Chicago defines year as fiscal year, which is the consecutive 12-month period beginning July 1 and ending June 30.
